Top Things to be Thankful for in 2008

In no particular order…

  1. My son being born.
  2. My daughter’s first words and ever growing vocabulary.
  3. My new car… oh, wait, that didn’t happen. (Did get a new road bike though!)
  4. Paid off a portion of our house.
  5. My wife still loves me.
  6. No ACL tear this year (still favor my left knee according to our Wii Fit).
  7. Still have a job, still learning new stuff.

Providence, not luck. Blessings too many to count.

Empowerment

It is funny in a way.

I am told that I an expert. That my opinion matters, and that I have full leeway to do what I think needs to be done.

Then I get slapped about on my decisions. Which teaches me not to do it next time.

So I am told that I am empowered, but in reality, I am not.

I merely am under the illusion of empowerment.

Or am I inadvertently defining the very essence of relationships here? Is this politics? Is this the basis of human relationships in a corporate environment?

Hmmm. Food for thought.

Wonderfalls

I wish Wonderfalls was still on the air.

I need some kooky talking kitsch in my life.

Thanksgiving?

Wasn’t it just Halloween?

END OF LINE.

Thought of the day

Why does shooting Zombies invoke so much enjoyment?

Out of all the games I’ve played, my favorites usually involve a shotgun and a host of undead.

Brilliant Keynote at Grammy NW Music Conference

Read it here.

The backdrop, of course, is one we know well, a story we’ve heard ad nauseum at this point. Physical sales are decreasing (~20% Y/Y). The “two hit songs for $17 at Best Buy” business is over. Digital sales are increasing (~40% Y/Y) but it’s not making up the difference. Not only is digital not making up for physical sales, as the tracks are unbundled and the model is a singles-driven iTunes business, the actual value of a unit of music continues to plummet.

That said it’s with great respect and with the belief that I’m as big a lover of music as anyone in this room I admit to you:

I don’t care.

Breaks the music industry “crises” down in succinct and useful terminology.

Book report

I got the distinct feeling yesterday that I was back in school.

I was sitting at my desk, typing furiously away at what eventually turned into a ten page single spaced project proposal, and felt as if I had something due in period 7 and if I didn’t get this shit done, it would affect my grade.

I have been out of school (high school, college or otherwise) for 3 years now.

But I guess after spending 72% of my lifetime in the halls of learning, it would become a part of my deeper psyche.

I still have nightmares occasionally about high school, though.

I am at school, the first period bell has rung, I am late for class, and I can’t find my locker. Then I find my locker, but I forgot the combination. Then I say screw it, and just go to class, but then I can’t find my class. And I know that something big is happening, like a test or something important is due.

Gah!

According to the ads…

You have two choices for President. And ONLY two choices.

One is a crazy left wing socialist that will tank our country with taxes and horrible leadership.

The other is a crazy right wing clone of our current anti-christ president and will tank our country by single-handedly losing wars and sinking the economy.

WTF.

Who falls for this shit?

And why do two of the most highly funded political parties IN THE WORLD have to resort to such stupid advertising?

(Both questions are rhetorical and I know the answer to both, unfortunately.)

For fear alone

No man should be elected on the principals of fear.

Any man proclaiming doom, has doomed themselves to failure.

A thin line

Sometimes the only difference between breakfast and dessert is which direction the sun is headed.

As I looked into the well lit food case at Starbucks… I pondered how the hell dessert became breakfast.
